Bringing Back the Gift of Sight
Vision loss caused by cataracts is one of the most common yet treatable conditions affecting older adults. Unfortunately, many individuals continue to live with impaired eyesight because the cost of surgery is beyond their reach. To help address this challenge, Kalpana Foundation, in collaboration with Sewa Kendra Leprosy Relief and the Lions Club of Kathmandu United Center, organized the Cataract Care Initiative once again to ensure that financial hardship would not prevent anyone from receiving the treatment they deserved.
How the Initiative Was Carried Out
The program began by identifying individuals in need of cataract surgery and facilitating comprehensive eye examinations by qualified ophthalmologists. Following medical assessments, five beneficiaries were selected for surgical support. Clinical evaluations determined that three beneficiaries required surgery in both eyes, while two required surgery in one eye, bringing the total to eight cataract operations.
The Foundation worked closely with healthcare professionals to coordinate appointments, provide financial assistance, and ensure that every beneficiary received safe and timely treatment. Care continued beyond the operation through post-surgical follow-up and guidance, helping beneficiaries recover with confidence.
A New Beginning
For the beneficiaries, the surgeries represented much more than a medical procedure. Regaining clear vision meant returning to daily routines with greater ease, recognizing loved ones once again, moving around independently, and participating more actively in family and community life. What was once limited by blurred vision became an opportunity for renewed confidence and dignity.
Looking Ahead
The Cataract Care Initiative demonstrates how collaborative efforts can create meaningful and lasting change. By removing financial barriers to essential healthcare, the program restored sight to five individuals through eight successful surgeries and reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to improving lives through accessible healthcare.
As Kalpana Foundation continues its mission, initiatives like these serve as a reminder that timely medical support has the power to transform lives, strengthen communities, and offer hope to those who need it most.
