Overview
This experience involved participation in a Special Children’s Olympics held in Butwal, organized for students from the School for Intellectually Disabled (Susta Manasthiti Bal Bidya Mandir). The event brought together children with intellectual disabilities to engage in structured sports and recreational activities designed to promote physical ability, confidence, and social interaction.
Context
The School for Intellectually Disabled in Butwal provides specialized education and support for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was established and continues to be supported by key contributors, including the Kalpana Foundation, which has played an important role in founding and contributing to the development of the institution.
Children with intellectual disabilities often face social stigma and limited access to inclusive opportunities. Events like the Special Olympics help create safe, encouraging spaces where they can participate, express their abilities, and experience a sense of achievement and belonging.
Our Role & Experience
During the event, we actively participated in supporting and engaging with the activities organized for the children. Our involvement included assisting in event coordination, encouraging participants, and interacting with them throughout various sporting activities.
The focus of the event was centered on inclusion and encouragement, ensuring that every child felt valued and supported regardless of performance. The emphasis remained on participation, confidence-building, and shared enjoyment rather than competition.
Being part of such an environment allowed for meaningful interaction and a deeper appreciation of the determination and enthusiasm displayed by the children.
Impact
The event created a positive and supportive atmosphere where children were able to participate freely and confidently. It encouraged physical activity, strengthened social interaction, and contributed to improved self-esteem among participants.
